Advancing the Potential of Hydropower: RevHydro

September 18, 2025

RevHydro is a European research project dedicated to the development and implementation of intelligent solutions for the modernization of existing hydropower plants. The objective is to enhance their sustainability, efficiency, and resilience over the long term.

At the core of the project lies the retrofitting and optimization of existing turbine runners using innovative technologies, which offer the following advantages:

  • Reduction in raw material consumption
  • Decrease in overall waste generation
  • Significant extension of turbine service life

The Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery (IHS) at the University of Stuttgart contributes to this endeavor through its long-standing expertise in numerical simulation. The research activities include:

  • Predicting the flow and structural behavior of existing turbine designs,
  • Simulating the performance characteristics of optimized designs,
  • Assessing and comparing designs with respect to hydraulic efficiency and structural integrity.

These efforts ensure that modernization measures are not only innovative, but also robust, sustainable, and suitable for practical application.
