History

of the Insitute

1928-1930

The Laboratory of Hydropower Machinery, Centrifugal Pumps and Hydraulics was built in an extension to the building on Seestraße 16. During World War II the building was irreparably destroyed.

1954

After two and a half years of construction, the new Institute of Hydropower Machinery and Pumps was entrusted to the University of Technology and f Prof. Dr.-Ing is. G. Hutarew was appointed Director of the Institute. The objective is summarized in three points, that are still valid today:

  1. Teaching of students
  2. Research
  3. Projects for and cooperation with industrial companies

The reconstruction of the Institute was supported with 940’000 DM by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Almost the entire mechanical and electrical equipment, worth more than 425000 DM, were donations from companies from all over Europe.

The Institute has a constant progress, both in teaching and research. The „Südwestdeutsche Monatsschrift für Kultur, Wirtschaft und Reisen“ (Monthly Magazine "Southwest German for Culture, Business and Travel") writes:

"In cooperation with the industry, new equipment and parts of hydraulic machinery are developed, that relevant domestic and foreign companies cannot develop in their own laboratories."

1976

Prof. Dr.-Ing. G. Lein was appointed Director of the Institute.

1979-1985

A decision was made in 1979 to move the Institute to a new building on the university campus area of Vaihingen, Pfaffenwaldring 10. There the test facilities were completely redesigned.

In 1985, the new building was inaugurated under the name of Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery (IHS). It is one of the most advanced institutions in the field of hydraulic fluid mechanics.

1986-1994

With the increasing number of students, teaching at IHS is also growing in scope. What started out as 4 lectures has become 8, and the number of student assignments has multiplied.

1994 Prof. Dr.-Ing. E. Göde became Director of the Institute.

2010-Today

Since 01.04.2010 Prof. Dr.-Ing. S. Riedelbauch is Director of the institute. In the course of renovation work, the premises and parts of the equipment were modernized. In addition, a new large test facility is being built, enabling model machines also be tested under operating transients.
