Inauguration of the New Test Stand at IHS and Colloquium on "Future Perspectives of Hydropower Technology"

December 17, 2024

After several years of planning, funding applications, contract awards, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning, the new, large-scale test stand at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery (IHS) at the University of Stuttgart was ceremoniously inaugurated. The test stand enables IEC-compliant measurements of model turbines and pumps. What sets it apart is its capability to study model machines under defined operational transients specifically.

The inauguration ceremony was complemented by a technical colloquium to generate research ideas and to provide insights for the next 10 to 20 years. This event, held on October 23-24, 2024, attracted around 70 participants from German-speaking countries, Europe, and Canada. Alongside twelve highly engaging technical presentations, attendees participated in guided tours of the test stand, which were conducted in smaller groups for detailed demonstrations and explanations.

We extend our heartful thanks to all participants for their interest and stimulating discussions. Special appreciation goes to our external contributors, including Andreas Mühlig, Dr. Jiri Koutnik, Dr. Nicolaus Römer, Prof. Cécile Münch-Alligné, Dr. Roland Jester-Zürker, Prof. Alexandre Presas, Dr. Saira Pineda, Dr. Elena Vagnoni, Dr. Mark Guggenberger, Prof. Sébastian Houde, and Alexandre Duparchy, for their highly interesting technical presentations.

Acknowledgments

We deeply grateful to the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of Baden-Württemberg, and the University of Stuttgart for their financial support, which made this major research facility a reality.
